18-year-old Sharon Man Arrested in Meat Cleaver Robberies

A Sharon man who police said wielded a meat cleaver in a string of robberies has been arrested.

Mathew Kiernan, 18, faces several charges, including armed robbery while masked, assault, larceny, breaking and entering a building at night and resisting arrest.

A Canton police officer spotted Kiernan riding an electric bicycle near Domino's Pizza on Washington Street. Kiernan was wearing the same dark clothing worn by the suspect in three robberies, and police said he was acting suspicious. After a short chase, Kiernan hit a curb and fell off his bike. After brief struggle he was taken into custody.

On May 21 around 10:20 p.m., Kiernan allegedly entered the Wash and Dry at 108 Washington Street in Canton and demanded cash.

Early Sunday, the subject broke into Kelly’s Place Restaurant located at 110 Washington Street in Canton. Before or shortly after, the subject robbed the Seasons Market on Sharon Street in Stoughton.

"I could not be more proud of the dedication and commitment of our officers in apprehending this very dangerous individual," Canton Police Chief Kenneth Berkowitz said. "We are grateful no one was physically harmed in these violent robberies and also realize how terrifying the ordeal must have been for the honest store clerks who were working the night shift."
