Several dogs perished in the fire

A 2-alarm fire consumed a Sandwich, Massachusetts house Friday afternoon.

The home along Route 6A is a total loss with officials estimating about $350,000 in damages.

One person who refused transport to a local hospital was evaluated at the scene.

Several dogs did not make it.

The Sandwich Fire Department responded to a call at 1:32 p.m. for a building fire at 40 Route 6A. Upon arrival, they could see smoke and fire from the driveway.

A second alarm was called at 1:54 p.m.

The fire was knocked down within 90 minutes, but crews remained on scene for four hours to conduct extensive overall and salvage operations. 

Several town inspectors were requested on scene, including a building inspector, wire inspector, water district and animal control.

The American Red Cross assisted the homeowners with housing.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
