2 Men Arrested for Alleged Drug Trafficking Had ‘Large Machete': State Police

More than $16,000 in cash was also found in the vehicle during the traffic stop

Two men arrested for alleged drug trafficking were also found with thousands of dollars in cash and a "large machete" at a traffic stop in Milton, according to authorities.

More than $16,000 was discovered in the vehicle, along with 56 grams of a substance believed to be heroin, Massachusetts State Police said.

A Massachusetts State Trooper had stopped a vehicle on Route 128 in Milton just after midnight on Tuesday when a Nissan SUV passed "extremely close" to him, state police said. The trooper dismissed the car he had stopped and rode ahead to pull over the Nissan.

The occupants of the car, two men, told the trooper that they didn’t have identification or paperwork for the vehicle, according to police. The trooper said he noticed a knife in the pocket of the driver, and a black leather bag with small amounts of marijuana and a substance he suspected to be an illegal drug.

When backup arrived, state police say they removed the driver, identified as 26-year-old Mario Valdez of Roxbury, and placed him under arrest.

 They noticed a large machete tucked between the door and his seat as they removed the passenger, 33-year-old Sergio De Los Santos of the Dominican Republic, according to state police.

The troopers discovered the cash and other substance once they had secured both suspects.

Both men were arraigned at Quincy District Court on Wednesday on alleged charges of trafficking in heroin and carrying a dangerous weapon, among other traffic violations.
