British Prime Minister Calls for Snap General Election in June

A new election requires parliamentary approval, and the body will be asked to vote for the election Wednesday

In a surprise announcement, British Prime Minister Theresa May called for a snap general election to be held June 8, NBC News reported.

Her ruling Conservative Party has a 21-point lead over the Labour Party, according to YouGov polls released this week. A new election requires parliamentary approval, and the body will be asked to vote for the election Wednesday.

May's announcement, made at 10 Downing Street, caps a bruising year in British politics that saw a vote for "Brexit," which prompted Prime Minister David Cameron to resign.

May backed the campaign to remain in the European Union, but has vowed to lead her nation through the long break-up negotiations.
