Capital Gazette Received Death Threats After Shooting

What to Know

  • A gunman shot and killed five people at the Capital Gazette newsroom in Maryland on Thursday
  • The paper said it has since received death threats and emails celebrating the shootings
  • But the paper also thanked the community for its support following the shooting

The Maryland newspaper where five people were killed by a gunman last week received death threats and emails celebrating the shootings, the staff says.

The Capital Gazette said in a Sunday editorial that it would not forget being called "an enemy of the people." President Donald Trump has used identical language to describe the news media.

The Capital Gazette said people also called for the paper to fire a reporter who cursed on national television after seeing her friends shot.

"Here’s what else we won’t forget: Death threats and emails from people we don’t know celebrating our loss, or the people who called for one of our reporters to get fired because she got angry and cursed on national television after witnessing her friends getting shot," the editorial says.

"We won’t forget being called an enemy of the people," it continues. "No, we won’t forget that. Because exposing evil, shining light on wrongs and fighting injustice is what we do."

The paper thanked the community for its support following the shooting and said more than 800 people subscribed to its digital edition.

Jarrod Ramos is charged with murder after police say he opened fire Thursday at the Gazette offices in Annapolis.
