1 Dead in Virginia After Helicopter Crashes Into Residence

Police are still working to locate and identify the pilot of the helicopter

At least one person was killed after a helicopter crashed into a residential structure in Virginia, authorities said.

Virginia State Police confirmed the fatality in a statement Sunday evening.

Police said they are still working to locate and identify the pilot of the helicopter, which crashed in a residential area in Williamsburg and started a fire at a townhouse.

Images on social media show smoke billowing from the roof of a house as firefighters work to put out the flames.

The College of William and Mary in Williamsburg issued a tweet Sunday warning students of the crash and urging them to avoid the area around the school's Dillard Complex.

The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board also responded to the scene.
