‘Hoverboards' Are Illegal in NYC: Report

Using one of this holiday season's hottest gifts in the city might land you on the NYPD's "naughty" list, according to reports.

The NYPD's 26th precinct tweeted that so-called hoverboards, the two-wheeled electric balancing scooters that have made their way onto sidewalks this year, are forbidden under city code.

According to the Daily News, an NYPD spokeswoman later confirmed that the popular gadgets are illegal because they are motor vehicles that can't be registered with the DMV. The 26th precinct deleted Wednesday's tweet because it referenced the wrong city code.

People caught riding the boards on city streets or sidewalks could be fined as much as $200, the News reports.

The scooters, which don't actually levitate, can cost upwards of $1,000 and are expected to be a big hit this season.
