Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is seen in a still from a Tuesday, April 23, 2019, video announcing that he intends to introduce a resolution naming a community in the Golan Heights — a disputed territory claimed by Israel — for U.S. President Donald Trump.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced Tuesday that he intends to bring a motion to name a Jewish community in the hotly contested location of the Golan Heights after U.S. President Donald Trump, NBC News reported.

"All Israelis were deeply moved when President Trump made his historic decision to recognize Israel's sovereignty over the Golan Heights," Netanyahu said in the video, filmed in the 700-square-mile area that Israel captured from Syria and annexed in 1981.

While most of the international community doesn't recognize Israeli sovereignty there — the majority of its residents are Druze and Syrian — Trump did so last month, breaking with years of precedent.

The decision came in the midst of Netanyahu's heated re-election fight, which he won.
