Alleged Drunk Driver Due in Court After Crashing Into Lawrence 7-Eleven

A drunk driving suspect appeared in court Monday after police say he crashed a sport utility vehicle through a convenience store in Lawrence, Massachusetts, over the weekend.

Juan Taveras Mora, 31, of Lawrence, faced a judge in Lawrence District Court on charges of operating under the influence, operating without a license and reckless driving.

Police said Taveras drove a Toyota Highlander through the 7-Eleven on Lowell Street around 4:10 a.m. Sunday.

Surveillance video showed the SUV breaking through the glass, barrelling into the back of the store and taking a 64-year-old man with it. The SUV just missed hitting a second victim.

Authorities said Taveras hit a male cab driver who was inside of the store talking to another customer at the time.

According to police, the victim, who normally goes to the 7-Eleven before starting his shift, sustained leg injuries and was taken to Lawrence General Hospital. His exact condition is unclear.

Taveras met with a court doctor. He will be sent to Bridgewater State Hospital, where he will be evaluated to make sure he can stand trial.
