Amazon to Open Distribution Center at Former Necco Site in Revere: Mayor

Amazon's newest Massachusetts distribution center will soon be opening at the site of an iconic candy factory in Revere, according to the city's mayor.

Revere Mayor Brian Arrigo tweeted Thursday that Amazon will move to the site of the now-closed New England Confectionery Company Factory, also known as NECCO.

He said after tens of millions of dollars in renovations, the distribution center will create hundreds of jobs.

"Soon Amazon will become the largest employer in the city of Revere. Amazon, welcome to Revere. We're moving forward together," Arrigo said in a video posted on twitter.

An exact timeline was not provided for the opening of the distribution center.

NECCO, best known for its Sweethearts candies, abruptly shut down its factory July 24, 2018, leaving its 230 workers stunned and unemployed. They were told to pick up their final paychecks that same Friday.

The company was then sold to Round Hill Investments L.L.C. while candy making equipment was auctioned off.

Amazon has been rapidly expanding in Massachusetts with its first brick-and-mortar location, Amazon 4-Star, at the Natick Mall. The company also has three fulfillment centers in Everett, Fall River and Stoughton.
