As Their Captain's Mother Battles Cancer, CM Football Team Rallies Around Awareness

Zach Goodwin's mother has helped him through everything in his life. Now, as she battles cancer, they're both getting some support from his football family.

"We play as a team," Goodwin, the team captain, said. "When one person messes up, we all mess up. That’s part of the team mentality."

Goodwin’s bond with his teammates gives him added support in handling his relationship between with his mother Seana, who has been diagnosed with breast cancer.

Through Seana’s pain, she continues to fight and inspire.

"She’s amazing. There’s no one better," Goodwin said. "She’s a fighter, she fights through it. I know if she can do that, I can do anything."

"She’s a very strong woman and a great role model for other people that have survived breast cancer," head coach John DiBiaso said. He knows what his captain is going through, as the coach of the undefeated Knights lost his mother to cancer in 1993.

"Inside I realize he’s probably hurting but on the outside he hasn’t missed a practice, he hasn’t missed a game," DiBiaso said. "He’s a leader on and off the field and in the classroom."

Outside of the classroom, 350 of Catholic Memorial's 500 students recently walked for breast cancer. The school has raised $230,000 for breast cancer since 2005.
