Bear Suspected in Death of 400-Pound Horse in Massachusetts

A Hinsdale resident posted on Facebook that the 400-pound horse was killed and pulled from its stall on Friday.

A Massachusetts family is mourning the death of their small horse that officials suspect was killed by a black bear.

The Berkshire Eagle reports that Kathleen Tench Adams, of Hinsdale, posted on Facebook that the 400-pound horse was killed and pulled from its stall on Friday.

Hinsdale Animal Control Officer Elizabeth Zipp says coyotes were seen feeding on the dead horse, but state Environmental Police investigators do not think coyotes could have pulled the horse up and over the gate of its stall, out of a barn and into the family's yard.

Zipp says wildlife officials suspect a bear was responsible. A bear was seen on the property a day later.

She advised people to bring in bird feeders and other food sources to discourage bear visits.
