An employee at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center was arrested Friday for allegedly ordering five bottles of the recreational and date rape drug GBL from Hong Kong.
Shannon Lyons, a vascular physiologist at Beth Israel, was arrested after a Massachusetts State Police trooper disguised as a DHL driver delivered the package to Lyons' Boston apartment, according to court documents.
The package, containing Gamma-Butyrolactone, was intercepted by U.S. Customs and Border Patrol and tested.
The undercover state trooper first attempted to deliver the package to Lyons around 11:25 a.m. Friday, but Lyons wasn't home. Lyons told the trooper over the phone that he "Really needs the package for the weekend, but I'm at work right now and won't be home until 5:15 pm," according to the police report.
The trooper returned at 5:30 and Lyons signed for and accepted the package, according to court paperwork. The trooper then identified himself and placed Lyons under arrest.
Lyons is charged with trafficking over 200 grams of a Class A drug.
He was arraigned Monday in Boston Municipal Court and released on $50,000 bail. He is expected to return to court Sept. 3.
