Mayor: 2nd Bullet Found on School Property Is ‘Unsettling'

Officials say there will be an increased police presence at all Beverly public schools on Tuesday

Officials in a Massachusetts town are actively investigating after the "unsettling" discovery of a second bullet on school property was made on Monday.

A bullet was found in the McKeown School parking lot on Monday afternoon, just days after a live round was discovered by two fifth graders in a hallway of Beverly Middle School.

As a result of Monday's discovery, which had been found by a parent at school dismissal time, officials announced there will be an increased police presence at all Beverly public schools on Tuesday.

"This is unsettling for our community" Mayor Mike Cahill said during a press conference Tuesday morning.

Cahill and Beverly Schools Superintedent Steven Hiersche both asked that parents to speak with students about safety concerns and to make sure they don't have inappropriate items on them as they head to school.

Although police would not divulge much at Tuesday's press conference, officials did say the bullet discovered at the McKeown School and the bullet discovered at Beverly Middle School are different.

"There's no way of knowing if the bullets are connected" at this time, Cahill said, but stressed that the police are taking the incidents seriously, adding that officials "can't dismiss anything."

The investigation into the incidents is ongoing, and anyone with information is asked to contact Beverly police.
