Bicyclist Killed in Crash With Dump Truck

A bicyclist was killed in a collision with a dump truck in Pelham, New Hampshire, on Friday afternoon.

Pelham Police and New Hampshire State Police responded to a serious motor vehicle crash around 2:45 p.m. on Route 38. The crash involved a 2015 Ford F550 dump truck operated by Patrick D'Alba, 39, of Pelham, and a motor driven Schwinn Cycle operated by Paul Nieves, 59, of Lowell, Massachusetts.

State police said their initial investigation shows that the dump truck was traveling south on Route 38 and was attempting to make a left-hand turn onto Jericho Road and failed to observe the cycle, which was headed northbound in the breakdown lane. The cycle subsequently struck the right rear of the dump truck.

Nieves sustained serious, life-threatening injuries and was taken by ambulance to Lowell General Hospital, where he later died.

The driver of the dump truck was not injured and is cooperating with the investigation.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation by state police.

As a result of the collision Route 38 in the area of Jericho Road was closed for several hours while the investigation took place.
