Body of Missing Stonington Woman Found in Rhode Island

Authorities found the body of a missing Stonington woman in the water off Westerly, Rhode Island Wednesday.

Police issued a Silver Alert for 58-year-old Lucia Ritacco on Monday. On Tuesday, a fisherman reported a suspicious vehicle parked on the beach in Westerly, Rhode Island. Investigators determined the vehicle belonged to Ritacco and began a search.

Multiple departments, including Westerly Police, Rhode Island State Police, Stonington Police, and local fire departments all assisted in the search.

At 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, investigators spotted what appeared to be a person in the water on surveillance footage at Winnapaug Pond in Westerly. Crews recovered the body and identified it as that of Lucia Ritacco. The Rhode Island Medical Examiner’s office will determine a cause of death.

The investigation is ongoing. Stonington police said at this time the death does not appear suspicious.
