Former Boston Celtics player Jabari Bird was given two additional charges in his assault case during a court appearance on Wednesday, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office.
Bird, 24, was arrested on Sept. 7 for allegedly beating his girlfriend during a fight, according to prosecutors. He is accused of repeatedly choking the victim, causing her to lose consciousness at times.
He was initially charged with strangulation, kidnapping, assault and battery and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon during his arrest. He was later charged with making threats and intimidation after appearing in court.
The victim told officials that Bird choked her numerous times over a four-hour period following a fight between the two at his Brighton home.
The added charges Bird faces were based on interviews and evidence gathered in the investigation, according to the district attorney's office.
Following his arrest, Bird issued a statement saying he's "taking some time away from the team as I deal with my legal and medical issues." He also offered an apology to his family, the Celtics, his teammates, fans and the NBA "for the unnecessary distraction that I have caused."
