A 12-year-old boy was hospitalized Tuesday after he was pulled from the water in Marshfield, Massachusetts, according to police.
A neighbor said she saw the boy floating face down in the water at Green Harbor Beach off Bay Avenue and quickly brought him to shore.
With the assistance of several good Samaritans, which included an off-duty Boston firefighter and a retired state police trooper, the neighbor said she started CPR on the boy until first responders arrived.
"A bunch of people came to the rescue," Marshfield Police Chief Phil Tavares said. "It was one woman who started the CPR that dragged him out of the water. Then there was a retired, high-ranking state police officer that continued CPR and then an off-duty Boston fireman continued CPR."
That high-ranking retired state police officer who jumped in to help was Superintendent Col. Marian McGovern.
"There was a young girl doing CPR on him and when she got tired, I took over," McGovern said.
The boy, who has not been identified, was unconscious when he was taken to South Shore Hospital, according to fire officials. Wednesday night, police said he had regained consciousness and was recoverintg with his family.

Authorities are now trying to determine exactly what happened.
"The water was flat, calm. There was no riptide or anything like that. He was not out deep," Tavares said. "In fact, I think he probably could have stood up, so we are trying to determine — I mean, the hospital might be able to tell better exactly what might have happened."
