Braintree Police Chief Announces Retirement Amid Missing Evidence Scandal

A Massachusetts police chief whose department has been embroiled in a scandal involving the theft of guns, cash and drugs from its evidence room has announced his retirement.

Braintree Chief Russell Jenkins in a letter to the mayor said he will retire effective Oct. 7 after 33 years with the department, the last four as chief.

Mayor Joseph Sullivan on Thursday accepted the resignation.

Jenkins in his letter said it had been an "honor and a privilege" to serve as chief but made no mention of the evidence room scandal.

An audit found that more than $400,000 in cash, 60 to 70 guns, and thousands of drug samples had gone missing from the evidence room, potentially putting hundreds of criminal cases in jeopardy. Several drug cases have already been dismissed.
