PD: Man Charged in Road Rage Assault on 71-Year-Old

A Massachusetts man appeared in court Thursday in connection with an alleged road rage assault in Easton.

Joseph Rivard, 21, of Brockton was charged with assault and battery on a person over age 60 and disturbing the peace at his arraignment in Taunton District Court.

Easton police said officers responded to the parking lot of North Easton Savings Bank on Washington Street around noon on Wednesday for a report of an assault in progress.

When officers arrived, a 71-year-old Medford man told police that Rivard had allegedly punched him in the face several times following a road rage incident.

During their investigation, police said they learned Rivard had attempted to pass the victim's vehicle while both men were traveling westbound on Belmont Street. At that time, the vehicles made contact and minor damage occurred.

Police said Rivard then followed the victim into the bank parking lot, where he got out of his vehicle and began banging on the victim's vehicle with his fists. When the victim got out of his vehicle, he said Rivard began punching him several times.

Authorities said the victim was able to fight back and stop Rivard from attacking him.

The victim, who has not been identified, was treated on scene for lacerations on his face.

Rivard also suffered minor swelling under his left eye. He was taken into custody at the scene.

He was released on several conditions following a dangerousness hearing. It's unclear if he has an attorney or when he's due back in court.
