Men's Fencing: Daryl Homer Wins Silver Medal for US

The second-time Olympian grew up in New York City

Daryl Homer jabbed, parried, leaped and, yes, stormed his way through Rio Wednesday, making it all the way to the gold medal match.

Homer’s run through the men’s individual sabre field, however, came to an end when he dropped a 15-8 decision to Hungary’s Aron Szilagyi.

The silver was Homer’s first medal in his second Olympics. He finished sixth individually—as a team, the Americans were eighth—in the 2012 London Games.

The silver medal was the culmination of a day that began with a 15-11 win over Ilya Mokretcov of Kazakhstan. Homer then defeated Germans Max Hartung and Matyas Szabo by 15-12 scores in the round of 16 and quarterfinals, respectively, before slipping past Iran’s Mojtaba Abedini, 15-14, in the semifinals.

Abedini lost to South Korea’s Junghwan Kim, 15-8, in the bronze medal match.

Homer, who moved from the U.S. Virgin Islands to New York City with his family when he was 5, grew up in the Bronx and was a four-time NCAA All-American for the St. John’s Red Storm.

He graduated from the school in 2013 with a degree in advertising, and he trains with Yury Gelman at the Manhattan Fencing Center.
