Brown University Enrolls Students From Puerto Rico Tuition Free

Brown becomes the latest school to offer help to Puerto Ricans affected by Hurricane Maria

Brown University is enrolling up to 50 students from the University of Puerto Rico tuition-free following the destruction of Hurricane Maria.

The Ivy League school in Providence will help the students find housing, as many still have no power or running water at their homes in Puerto Rico.

Brown has already enrolled 15 students from the University of Puerto Rico.

Several of the students told WJAR-TV they were thankful for Brown's offer, and said it was difficult leaving their families behind.

Brown has stepped up after other natural disasters. The school welcomed students displaced in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Other mainland universities are also offering in-state tuition to students affected by Hurricane Maria, NPR reported

State colleges in Florida offering in-state tuition include the University of Florida, University of South Florida, Florida State University, University of Central Florida and Florida International University. Community Colleges in the state have also jumped onboard, including: Miami Dade College, Broward College, St. Petersburg College, Valencia College and Seminole State College.

Broward College in Miami and Hillsborough Community College in Tampa have also extended in-state tuition to students affected by Hurricane Harvey in Texas.

University of Florida is also giving 1,000 students access to online courses for the next two semesters at no charge.

In New Orleans, the University of Tulane announced it would offer one free semester for Puerto Rican students as a way of "paying it forward," after Tulane's students were taken in at other schools after Hurricane Katrina.

Other schools offering tuition assistance are: 64 campuses of the State University of New York, 24 City University of New York institutions, 17 Connecticut State Colleges & Universities, and also the University of Arkansas.
