The U.S. Coast Guard is suspending its search for a boy from Manchester, New Hampshire who was swept out to sea in North Carolina on Wednesday.
The 4-year-old's mother says they were walking along the beach in Kitty Hawk when a wave caught him and pulled him out of sight. Coast Guard boats and a helicopter searched the area for hours but were unable to find the boy.
The boy's name has not been released.
A heart-shaped seashell memorial began to form Thursday on the beach where the boy and his mother were walking when a wave hit the boy, carrying him out into the ocean.
Officials said the mother lost sight of her son as he went further from the shore. Police say the family was vacationing from New Hampshire and the boy was their only child.
Crews combed 130 square miles before suspending their search Wednesday night. Now, local officials and some volunteers continue to look for signs of the boy.
