To help residents and emergency personnel stay connected in the wake of a series of gas explosions that sparked fires across Lawrence, Andover and North Andover, Comcast has opened up access to 89,000 Xfinity WiFi hotspots in eastern Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire.
The hotspots will be available to anyone who needs them, including non-Xfinity customers, for free. The hotspots will remain open until Monday, Sept. 17.
Residents across more than 500 local communities can immediately benefit from WiFi access courtesy of Comcast.
For a map of the Xfinity WiFi hotspots, residents can visit http://wifi.xfinity.com/ and enter their zip code.
Once in range of a hotspot, select the "xfinitywifi" network name in the list of available hotspots and then launch a browser. Xfinity customers can sign in with their usernames and passwords and will automatically be connected to Xfinity WiFi hotspots in the future. Non-Xfinity customers should visit the "Not an Xfinity Internet Customer" section on the sign-in page to get started. Non-customers will be able to renew their complimentary sessions every two hours while the hotspots are available.
