Community College in Rhode Island to Open a Food Pantry

Students can get nonperishable food items and some household and personal hygiene products.

A community college in Rhode Island is opening its first food pantry for its students.

The Community College of Rhode Island says the food pantry will open Monday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at its Lincoln campus.

The college says it's opening the pantry because research shows that roughly a quarter of community college students do not have reliable access to enough affordable, nutritious food.

It will be open to enrolled CCRI students. Students can get nonperishable food items and some household and personal hygiene products.

Staff and student volunteers will operate the food pantry five days a week.

The college is planning a speaking program on Monday with CCRI President Meghan Hughes, who will be joined by a student and donors.
