Connecticut Senate Passes Gun Storage Bill After Teen's Death

The measure is known as 'Ethan's Law' in honor of 15-year-old Ethan Song, who shot himself with a handgun owned by a friend's father in January 2018.

Update: On June 13, 2019, Gov. Ned Lamont signed the bill into law.

The Connecticut Senate has passed legislation stemming from the death of a Guilford teen who accidentally shot himself in the head.

Known as "Ethan's Law," the bill cleared the Senate on a 34 to 2 vote Thursday afternoon.

The bill is in response to the death of 15-year-old Ethan Song, who shot himself with a handgun owned by a friend's father in January 2018. It requires both loaded and unloaded firearms to be safely stored in homes where there are minors under age 18.

The bill also requires the State Board of Education to develop a firearms safety guide for students in kindergarten through grade 12 for school districts to use, if they choose.

It now awaits approval by the governor.

Song's parents have been rallying support for a similar law at the national level.
