Couple Treated for Hypothermia After Man Falls Through Ice

A husband and wife were treated for hypothermia Monday after the man fell through the ice in Arlington, Massachusetts.

Police say a 68-year-old Arlington man was skating on Spy Pond with his wife when he fell through the ice. Officers and firefighters responded around 4:45 p.m.

The man, according to police, was holding onto a piece of broken ice when he was found. He was conscious and alert, but officials say he was in serious danger.

His wife was on the ice trying to help the man.

Police gave the man a rope to hold onto before firefighters arrived with water rescue suits. He was helped back to shore using a sled.

Firefighters treated the man and his wife for hypothermia. Both were transported to Mount Auburn Hospital and are expected to make full recoveries.

"Rapid response time matched with the right training and equipment made the difference in this instance," acting Arlington Police Chief Julie Flaherty said in a statement. "We are very grateful that the ice skater was able to be rescued safely."
