Police Investigating After Worker Found Dead at Construction Site in Roslindale

The death is believed to be related to a work accident and foul play is not suspected

Police are investigating a death at a 3-family home under renovation in Boston's Roslindale neighborhood.

Boston police say they received a call at 7:30 a.m. Monday for a well-being check at 1026 Canterbury St. The well-being check resulted in a death investigation after a male worker in his 30s was found dead. Police cleared the scene around 10 a.m., and officials put a stop order sign up on the door.

The death is believed to be related to a work accident and foul play is not suspected.

“Angers me,” said Larry Bastianelli, a contractor who lives across the street. “It shouldn’t happen.”

Bastianelli says he’s been complaining about some of the work on the Canterbury Street home for weeks, concerned in particular about safety.

“No one should die, not in construction,” he said. “Gives construction a bad name and it just shouldn’t happen.”

What exactly did happen remains unclear but we do know work at the construction site was prohibited on weekends. Inspectors from the city of Boston say the worker was at the site Sunday afternoon, however, which is why a neighbor took a photo of a work truck for the company ABT when it pulled up around 2 p.m. Sunday.

The truck remained there throughout the night, until the worker was found dead Monday morning.

ABT would not comment on the incident Monday but city inspectors plan to issue a violation Tuesday.

“Very unsafe," Bastianelli said. "You’ve got two men on a job at all times just in case an accident happens.”

It’s unclear if anyone else was on site but it has been shut down as safety investigators look into what happened.
