Device Containing Radioactive Material Stolen From Tolland

Connecticut State Police are trying to track down a testing tool that contains sealed sources of radioactive material.

Police said the Tri-State Testing Lab, LLC, in Berlin reported the theft of a portable moisture-density gauge. The gauge is used to test soil density and contains small amounts of cesium-137 and americium-214. It was in its case locked in the trunk of a car that was stolen out of a driveway in Tolland on June 30, according to police.

The stolen car is a 2009 white Honda Accord with Connecticut license plate 244RJL.

When the tool is not in use its handle is locked and the radioactive sources shielded. However, if someone tries to tamper with the device they could be exposed to radiation.

Anyone who spots the gauge should not touch it and should report the find to NRC’s Operations Center at 301-816-5100. Anyone with information on the theft should contact Connecticut State Police at 860-896-3200.
