Major Change Coming to Mass. Highway Exits

A change is coming to exits on Massachusetts highways.

A federal mandate is requiring states to number their exits based on mileage, according to Jacquelyn Goddard, the communications director for the Massachusetts Department of Transportation.

Goddard said Monday that the state would hold 12 public information meetings starting soon.

Construction on the new exit system will begin in late summer of 2020, beginning in western Massachusetts and moving eastward.

"Old Exit" signs will be up for at least two years after the new exits are designated.
