Fall River District Fire Chief Charged with Drunken Driving

A brief car chase involving Massachusetts State Police resulted in a Fall River district fire chief being charged with drunken driving, according to WJAR.

Ambrose Smith, 54, of Dartmouth was arrested early Friday morning.

According to state police, a report was filed around 12:45 a.m. Friday about a red pickup truck driving recklessly around the edges of Interstate 195 south near Faunce Corner Road.

Police said Smith, who was driving the truck, did not pull over for a state trooper and caused the trooper to follow him for over a mile. Smith finally stopped near Dartmouth Mall after leading police through a cemetery.

State police said as they were removing Smith from the truck, which was still in gear, the truck rolled over a trooper's foot. The trooper did not seek medical help during the incident.

Troopers said they came to the conclusion that Smith had been driving while intoxicated by alcohol.

Smith is due in court on Feb. 1.
