‘Fortune' Lists Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker Among ‘World's Greatest Leaders'

Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker has certainly proven to be a well-liked leader — he has consistently topped lists of most popular U.S. governors. But is he one of the best leaders in the world?

In Fortune Magazine's sixth-annual "World's Greatest Leaders" list, the iconic business publication had Baker ranked 20th.

"Baker's approval ratings routinely land near 70%, a remarkable feat for a Republican leading a famously liberal state," Fortune wrote. "He's earned that favor with a quiet bipartisanship that feels almost foreign these days."

The magazine went on to call Baker a "data-driven fixer" and applauded his work fighting the opioid epidemic and social services issues, as well as signing a green energy bill into law.

Baker was first elected in 2014 and was re-elected in 2018. The most recent rankings by Morning Consult show Baker remained the most popular governor through the fourth quarter of 2018, with his approval rating listed at 72 percent.

Bill and Melinda Gates topped the list. Special Counsel Robert Mueller was ranked third, and Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McAvoy, beaten by Bill Belichick and the Patriots in Super Bowl LIII, was ranked 17th.

By extension, Reps. Ayanna Pressley and Lori Trahan (D-Mass.) made the list, too — the "pink wave" of 42 women newly elected to Congress in 2018 were collectively called the 18th best leader.
