Garden Grove Man Hacks Wife's Head With Meat Cleaver, Surrenders to Police

Police say marital problems led to the stabbing

A man hacked his wife in the head with a large meat cleaver in front of their 7-year-old child at their Southern California home, then surrendered to police, leading officers back to the bloody scene where the woman was found critically wounded, Garden Grove police said.

The suspect, 46-year-old Thang Van Nguyen tried to turn himself in at a fire station about 6:45 a.m. Tuesday "for murdering his wife," the Garden Grove Police Department said in a news release.

When officers arrived, Nguyen led them back to his apartment in the 12700 block of Flower Street. Police found the woman, 44-year-old Huong Nguyen, conscious with multiple stab wounds to the head. She was taken to the UC Irvine Medical Center, where she was in critical condition.

Police said a 7-year-old child witnessed the attack. A 19-year-old man was also at the home but did not see it take place - he called their uncle, who then called 911.

The manager at the apartment complex, Tony Caminos, said the family had moved in about six months ago, and the boy and teen are the couple's children.

Caminos described the family as "good people," and he was "surprised by what happened."

Officers say marital problems led to the stabbing.

Nguyen was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. It wasn't clear if he had an attorney.

The children were staying with an uncle, police said.
