Red Sox Designate Hanley Ramirez for Assignment

The Boston Red Sox announced Friday that they have designated Hanley Ramirez for assignment to make room on the roster for Dustin Pedroia.

Pedroia was activated from the 10-day disabled list after starting the season on injured reserve following offseason knee surgery.

The Sox now have seven days to release or trade Ramirez, reports the Boston Globe.

"Thank you #RedSoxNation. It’s been real. Love you always," Ramirez said Friday on Twitter.

Ramirez, 34, has had a rough May and is currently in the middle of a five-game hitless stretch. He was hitting .254 for the season, with six home runs and 29 RBIs in 44 games this season while splitting time between first base and designated hitter. Last year, he hit .242 with 23 home runs and 62 RBIs.

The three-time All-Star was originally signed by the Red Sox in 2000 before being traded to the Miami Marlins for pitcher Josh Beckett. He rejoined the Sox in 2015 after signing a four-year, $88 million contract as a free agent.

The Red Sox, at 34-16, are currently leading the AL East by one game over the New York Yankees. Boston begin a three-game home series with the Atlanta Braves on Friday night.
