Gloucester Mayor Offers Aid to Displaced Plant Workers

Mayor Sefatia Romeo Theken is rallying services to assist about 150 employees of a fish processing company that abruptly closed

A Massachusetts mayor is rallying services to assist about 150 employees of a fish processing company that abruptly closed.

The Gloucester Daily Times reports that Gloucester Mayor Sefatia Romeo Theken said in a statement that members of her administration were to meet with Gov. Charlie Baker on Monday about the closure Friday of National Fish & Seafood.

She says some employees received 60 days of pay and an indefinite continuation of health insurance.

The city has worked with state Senate Minority Leader Bruce Tarr and state Rep. Ann-Margaret Ferrante, both of Gloucester, to launch a response team through the state's Office of Business Development.

Those services include assistance with unemployment insurance, job skills and career center referrals.

Fishing Partnership Support Services will help answer health insurance questions from the workers.
