AAA Driver Rescues Elderly Couple From 4-Alarm House Fire

A driver from AAA is being called a hero after he helped save an elderly couple from a 4-alarm house fire in Grafton, Massachusetts.

The house at 97 Millbury St. is a total loss after the fire broke out Wednesday. But no one was hurt, and many are thinking AAA driver Norman Strom.

"Just a little bit of smoke coming out of the garage," Strom recalled seeing as he drove by. "It didn't look normal so I stopped and pulled in."

He could hear the flames crackling. He rushed in, and he ended up getting two elderly people and a cat out of the house.

"By the time I got them out, they were starting to get smoke into the house," Strom said.

Within minutes, the house was engulfed in flames.

Randall Rixham owns the home. The elderly survivors are his in-laws.

"Glad everyone is OK. But there's a lot of stuff that can't be replaced," he said.

Strom says he does not feel like a hero and that it's "part of the job."

Crews from Shrewsbury, Hopedale and Westborough confirm provided mutual aid to the Grafton Fire Department.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
