Hazmat Situation at Waste Treatment Facility on Deer Island

Emergency crews responded to Deer Island on Friday afternoon for a hazardous materials incident at a state waste treatment facility.

According to the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority, a 55-gallon drum at its Deer Island wastewater treatment plant was bulging a bit and the hazmat response was only precautionary.

Boston police confirmed that they were on scene at 190 Tafts Avenue on Deer Island but had no further information.

Boston fire said they responded for a container filled with hazardous waste products that was overpressurized. The pressure was released and a cleanup company called in.

There were no exposures or spills and no one was injured. Fire officials said the building was evacuated as a precaution.
