A person was airlifted Wednesday after being hit while helping a disabled vehicle on Interstate 95 in Boxford, Massachusetts.

State police confirmed after 6 p.m. that the crash had taken place on the southbound side of the highway, south of the interchange with Route 97.

One vehicle was disabled on the side of the road. According to police, a second car pulled over to assist. The person who was helping was hit by another vehicle and seriously injured.

All of the southbound lanes were shut down. Northbound lanes were closed for a medical helicopter to land, but they have since reopened.
