Erick Attridge came face to face with a whale off the coast of Gloucester, Massachusetts.
Moments earlier, he knew something was up when a school of fish started acting strange. Then there was the sound.
"I heard a whale breathe in the distance," said Attridge, who grew up on the water.
Attridge was in his kayak Monday evening fishing, just before sunset, when the waves started bumping and the whale appeared just 20 feet away.
"Hoping I wasn't going to tip over and how big his wave was and how close he was going to get," said the 43-year-old.
Attridge says he wasn't as worried about capsizing as he was about getting the perfect shot.
"I'm pushing my camera, but my fingers were wet, so it wouldn't work," he said. "I hit it right as the whale was coming out of the water."
