Fire officials are investigating the cause of a 2-alarm blaze that broke out in a historic Cape Cod building Tuesday night.
The fire was reported at about 8:30 p.m. inside the historic Manoment Building in Bourne, Massachusetts, according to authorities. The structure houses nine apartment units and 11 tenants, all who are now displaced.
All but two tenants were able to escape from the fire on their own. One of the residents who required assistance was an elderly man, who was rescued by firefighters from a second floor window.
"We were trying to tell him to wrap his face with some towels or something," witness Nick Fitalia said. "He didn't have anything and then he disappeared for a second. He showed back up and the cops went to go run in."
The elderly man was taken to an area hospital and is expected to recover. The extent of his injuries is unclear.
The Manoment Building is located on 1 Sandwich Road. The Bourne Historical Society said it housed the first Bourne Post Office in 1828.
