One of Boston's oldest New Year's Day traditions took place on Monday, despite the brutal cold.
An estimated 600 people braved the frigid temperatures to take a dip in the Boston Harbor for the annual "L Street Brownies" New Year’s Day Plunge.
Organizer Dan Monahan had told the Boston Herald last week that the plunge always takes place, no matter what the temperatures are.
"We’re stubborn people in Boston. We’re about tradition," Monahan told the Herald. "OK, so it’s cold. You can’t let it beat you. We’re mentally tough people. This is hardcore."
The event started at 9 a.m. outside the BCYF Curley Community Center on Columbia Road in South Boston.
The plunge has taken place for 114 years.
The Brownies are the oldest "polar bear" club in America. The group promotes health, fun, and friendship.

Each year, the plunge is dedicated to past and recently deceased Brownies.
