Layoffs May Hit Twin River Casino in Rhode Island After Encore Opening

Twin River says it could be forced to lay off up to 30 table game supervisors to reflect the loss in business

Twin River Casino in Rhode Island says it is feeling the competitive bite from a new resort casino in Massachusetts.

Twin River said Tuesday it could be forced lay off up to 30 table game supervisors to reflect the loss in business. The casino in Lincoln says revenue from table games dipped 34 percent in July compared to the same month the prior year.

July was the first full month of operation for the Wynn Resorts-owned Encore Boston Harbor casino in Everett. Twin River said the impact of the competition was greater than it had expected.

Twin River says it's exploring the possibility of voluntarily reducing hours to avoid some layoffs, and also hopes business will pick up enough after Labor Day to allow some workers to be rehired.
