Lowell Spinners Offer to Host Boxing Match Between Donald Trump and Joe Biden

President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden have been trading barbs at rallies and on social media. Now, the Red Sox' Class A Short Season affiliate wants to bring their fight to the boxing ring.

The Lowell Spinners announced Thursday that they were inviting Trump and Biden to a fight at their home field of LeLacheur Park. The team says former world light welterweight champion boxer Micky Ward, a Lowell native and the subject of the movie "The Fighter," has agreed to serve as the referee for the "Slasher at LeLacheur."

At a rally against sexual assault this week at the University of Miami, Biden spoke out against Trump, citing the comments he made on the 2005 "Access Hollywood" tape.

"If we were in high school, I'd take him behind the gym and beat the hell out of him," Biden said, adding that a man who disrespects women is "usually the fattest, ugliest S.O.B. in the room."

The president fired back on Twitter.

"Crazy Joe Biden is trying to act like a tough guy," he wrote. "Actually, he is weak, both mentally and physically, and yet he threatens me, for the second time, with physical assault. He doesn't know me, but he would go down fast and hard, crying all the way. Don't threaten people Joe!"

The Spinners are offering the Republican president and the Democratic former vice president an opportunity to settle the score.

"It's a shame this feud has escalated the way it has, and the American people deserve better," Spinners owner Dave Heller said in a statement. "Instead of a war of words, let's give the two of them a chance to settle their differences the old fashioned way, in the ring, with the great Micky Ward officiating."

The invitation closed with a jab that could get under the president's skin.

"If the fighters show up, the boxing match will take place regardless of the weather, no matter how stormy [it] may get," the team said in a statement.
