A Connecticut woman who was sexually assaulted nearly 30 years ago finally got to see the man she said raped her put behind bars.

Osvaldo Muniz was sentenced Tuesday to nine years in prison on a kidnapping charge.

Prosecutors said the 68-year-old kidnapped and raped the then 19-year-old Norwalk woman at knifepoint in August 1988, the Hour reports.

The woman was staying with friends and woke when she heard footsteps upstairs, so went to go see if her friends were arriving home. When she left the basement, Muniz grabbed her from behind, dragged her out of the house and sexually assaulted her, according to police.

Muniz was not arrested until December 2013 when DNA evidence linked him to the attack.

Prosecutors had to drop the rape charge because the statute of limitations had expired, but the kidnapping charge stood.

The woman said in court that her attacker "took a piece of my soul."

Muniz apologized, blaming his drug habit, and told the victim he was breaking into homes to feed his addiction and didn't intend to rape her.
