Man Who Cheated Elderly Neighbor Out of Home Avoids Jail

A former Lowell city official convicting of cheating his incapacitated neighbor into signing her house over to him weeks before her death has been spared time behind bars.

Former building inspector David St. Hilaire was sentenced Thursday to two years of probation and fined $2,500. He was convicted of larceny earlier this week.

The Sun reports that the 69-year-old St. Hilaire was also ordered to turn the house over to the woman who was named as the original beneficiary in the neighbor's will.

Erika Magill, St. Hilaire's neighbor, signed her home over to him in exchange for $92,000 while she was ill in a nursing home in 2010. Magill, who was 86, died three weeks later and was never paid.

St. Hilaire has been living in the home since.
