Man Charged With OUI Had Child in Car

A Massachusetts man has been arrested after driving under the influence with a child in the car.

According to Wareham police, Robert A. Place, 48, of Wareham, Massachusetts was arrested Saturday night after officers responded to the area of Cranberry Highway for a report of an erratic operator.

When officers arrived on the scene, they received information that the vehicle was headed to an address on Edgewater Drive. An officer arrived at the address as the suspect was pulling into the driveway, police said.

According to police, Place was uncooperative with the officer.

After investigating, police determined that Place had been driving impaired with a minor child in the car.

Place was handcuffed but he resisted by trying to pull away from the officers, screaming and yelling and causing a disturbance, police said.

He was transported to Police Headquarters where he was held on $5,000 bail.

Place is scheduled to appear in Wareham District Court on Monday.

He is facing multiple charges, including operating under the influence of alcohol, child endangerment while operating under the influence, open container of alcohol and resisting arrest.

It is unclear if Place has an attorney.

Acting Police Chief John Walcek said, “Sadly, we have a child that was put in harm’s way because of the actions of an adult. One of our most important duties is protecting those that cannot protect themselves.”

He added, “The officers responding to this incident took immediate and decisive action to ensure the safety of the child.”
