Man With Several Warrants Arrested in Boston's Mattapan Neighborhood

Donnell Phillips, 31, of Lynn, is facing several charges after attempting to flee from police

A man with several warrants was arrested in Boston's Mattapan neighborhood Friday evening after attempting to flee from police.

According to Boston police, officers on patrol Friday evening observed a motor vehicle parked at the intersection of Wayland Street and Howard Avenue in Mattapan. They identified a passenger in the backseat to be a person with multiple warrants for his arrest. They also believed he was possibly in possession of a firearm.

Officers tried to conduct a traffic stop to take the man, later identified as Donnell Phillips, 31, of Lynn, into custody, but the female driver refused to yield to police. Instead she drove off and came to a stop in a parking lot at the intersection of Columbia Road and Washington Street.

According to officers, Phillips then jumped out of the car in an effort to flee from officers. A brief foot pursuit ensued before the suspect was apprehended in the area of 24 Bishop Joe L. Smith Way.

Officers found Phillips was carrying a TCP Taurus firearm loaded with four rounds of live ammunition and five small plastic bags containing crack cocaine.

Phillips was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of a loaded firearm second offense, unlawful possession of a loaded firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition.

The female driver was later discovered to have a revoked license. She was issued a citation, a summons and was released from the scene, police said. There was also a front passenger in the car who was released.

Phillips also has multiple active warrants including a warrant out of Lawrence District Court for charges of operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license; several warrants out of Roxbury District Court for charges including unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition and two counts of possession with intent to distribute class B drugs; and a warrant out of South Boston District Court for charges of operating under the possession of alcohol and possession of class B drugs.

Phillips is expected to be arraigned in Dorchester District Court. It is unclear if he has an attorney.
