A Massachusetts State Police trooper was hospitalized Friday morning after his cruiser was hit by another vehicle on Interstate 95 in Newburyport.
State police spokesman Dave Procopio said the trooper was in his cruiser on I-95 south around 6:30 a.m. working a detail on a construction project when he was struck from behind by a Ford Interceptor pickup truck.
At the time of the crash, the marked cruiser had its emergency blue lights activated and was partially blocking the high-speed lane. Authorities said road crews also put up signs in the median strip just south of Exit 57.
When the trooper saw the truck approaching from his rear-view mirror, he tried to move out of the way and into the median but could not. The force of the crash pushed the cruiser into the median and spun it around 180 degrees. Both vehicles were seriously damaged in the crash.
The trooper was taken to Anna Jacques Hospital in Newburyport as a precaution and later released.
The 44-year-old driver of the pickup truck from Gorham, Maine, was not injured. He was issued a citation for failing to move over for an emergency vehicle. His name was not released.
