Massachusetts Man Accused of Stealing Police Cruiser After Chase

The suspect drove off in the police cruiser after a police chase and lead officers on another pursuit.

A Massachusetts man is facing multiple charges after he allegedly stole a police cruiser during an early-morning chase through several towns.

"We were dealing with the unknown and that's always tough for police officers," Hanson Police Chief Michael Miksch said.

Daniel Egan, 36, of Plymouth, sped through a stop sign at Indian Head and Liberty streets in Hanson around 1 a.m. Thursday, police said.

He refused to pull over for officers and led them on a chase across town lines.

Egan, who was driving a 2010 Chevy Malibu, hit a police cruiser and tried to force it off the road, according to police.

Tire deflation devices were deployed and forced the vehicle to stop on Route 58 in Halifax.

Police said Egan then ran into a wooded area and managed to escape police custody. While police were searching the woods, he got into a cruiser and drove away.

Tire deflation devices were used once again to disable the cruiser on Route 58. The cruiser was stopped at the Plympton/Carver line in front of Tractor Supply around 1:15 a.m.

Egan refused to come out of the vehicle which led to a standoff that lasted approximately 20 minutes.

Police used bean bag rounds to shoot out the window. Egan eventually exited the vehicle and refused commands to surrender. A K9 from the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office was used to subdue him.

After being taken into police custody, he was transported to the Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital for treatment of a dog bite to his hand.

"The officers involved with this, their professionalism, their patience and restraint is to be commended," Chief Miksch said.

Egan is being charged with operating to endanger, failure to stop for a police officer, leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident, assault and battery, larceny of a motor vehicle, and numerous other motor vehicle violations.

It's unclear when he will be arraigned. Bail has not yet been set.
