Mass. Secretary of State Lauds Dropping of Census Question

Massachusetts Secretary of State William Galvin is welcoming the decision by the U.S. Census Bureau to start printing the 2020 Census without the addition of a citizenship question.

Tuesday's announcement came days after the U.S. Supreme Court blocked the question.

Galvin has argued that the question could discourage residents of Massachusetts who aren't citizens from responding to the questionnaire -- which could depress the state's population count.

The Democrat said he's still worried that all the attention given to the citizenship question could still keep non-citizens from being counted.

Galvin said Tuesday that his office is planning an outreach effort to immigrants who may be fearful about responding to the census.

He said an accurate count will help ensure Massachusetts gets its share of federal money.
